It’s Alive! My new web presence
If you haven’t noticed for the last 3 months, my image galleries were taken down; I’ve had only a blog to update.
Why were you out of commission?
Because in May I terminated my four year relationship with PhotoShelter. Mind you, I was very pleased with their archive and their long list of features, especially the rights-managed/royalty-free download e-commerce setup. However, my clients wanted framed prints and PhotoShelter’s print vendors did not offer frames. So, instead of it being an automated process, I had to work with my clients outside of PhotoShelter. This saved me a lot of transaction fees but the time and effort to find and work with printers and/or framers across the country was not an efficient workflow nor was it very profitable.
What did you do?
I asked my friends and fellow photographers who they use. Zenfolio and SmugMug were the top two. I eventually decided on SmugMug because their support team (Support Heroes) was second to none and I absolutely love BayPhoto print lab.
While I liked SmugMug’s free themes, they also provide you with a list of certified customizers just in case you have other ideas but no clue how to get them to the screen. I chose jR Customization. Jerry Roek was so helpful and insightful to my needs and concerns on our initial consultation that I just had to go with him.
I’m not saying it was an easy transition; it was not. Just the differences between what the two photo-sharing hosts required of an image had me scrambling furiously behind the scenes. Then deciding on a logo and fonts and responsive web design layout, etc. took longer than expected. Jerry has done some marvelous work on other’s sites that I just had to have a little of this and a little of that. It was exhausting sometimes.
In the end this is what we came up with…
